Winter is here! And if you’re a fellow Canadian or someone who lives in a climate where winters are cold and harsh this post is for you!

Although we are still in the midst of this pandemic, I think this post may be helpful for those that are looking to spend more time outdoors this winter just to get out of the house. I used to be a commuter and would travel to and from work. These days, although I am working from home primarily, I am still taking walks daily which involve some degree of winter preparation.

Here are my essentials for winter:

1. Thermals/base layers

If you’re planning on doing ANY outdoor activities this winter it is so important that you dress appropriately. Base layers and thermals are SO important. My favourite place to buy these are at Uniqlo. Uniqlo carries a heattech line and you can get a good top and tights (there are different weights depending on how warm you want that base layer to be).

I will wear this under my clothing for extra warmth and if I know I will be outside in the cold for a while weather its for a winter walk or going skating, etc.

2. Headwear

Another important thing to have is some type of headwear. Everyone is different in terms of their preference. There is the headband, the beanie or ear muffs. I have all three because I cam very particular with my hair. If I am on first day hair I never wear a beanie I will usually opt for ear muffs so I don’t speed up the “expiry date” on my clean hair. I will usually do a headband when my hair is up (this is usually also second or third day hair) and I will usually use a hat when my hair is pretty dirty (third day hair).

Having some sort of headwear when you go out in the winter is key to keeping yourself warm.

3. Winter boots

This is KEY. You need to have a good pair of winter boots. When looking for a pair here are the qualities I will usually look for:

Weight – Choose a lightweight boot. Make sure you try it on and walk around with the boot because if you choose something too heavy it will truly just be a pain using for a long period of time.

Traction – Make sure you take a look at the bottom of the boot and make sure that its not totally flat. Winters in Toronto can get very icy and the last thing you want is to wipe out because your boots didn’t have great traction.

Waterproof – I cannot stress this enough, winters in Toronto are also slushy and not cute. Making sure your boots are waterproof is a must!

Most winter boots are not cute and I’ve learned to accept this. Winter gear is the type of clothing where I am almost willing to look past style to make sure that it works well. However, there are also some pretty cute items out there and there are ways to make things that look stylish and beautiful warm and functional.

4. A good winter coat

It is so easy to get bored when you have one winter coat that you use over and over again. If you are able to I would at least get two different coats that you can interchange. Make sure you get a dark one and a light one (neutral colours of course so it can easily go with anything) and also consider a parka and a wool coat.

A parka is great for more wet days where its slushy and the rain/snow is coming down. It will keep you dry and warm and you are able to wear a parka with just a T-shirt underneath (if you get a good one).

A wool coat is also I nice type of coat to have for the winter. I encourage you to get a looser fit because you will likely layer this with your thicker and more heavy sweaters.

Another good way to use a wool coat on days where it is super cold out is to use a vest as a layering piece underneath (see my winter clothing backs post). This is such a great way to get some extra warmth.

5. Scarves

I am guilty of collecting scarves. There are endless possibilities when it comes to scarves but I think that a great substantial scarf (a neutral paid or a neutral solid colour that you can match with your gloves and headwear is a great choice. I think you only really need a couple – a lightweight and a heavier weight scarf.

For a time circle scarves were in style and everywhere but I think if you’re looking for longevity and functionality, a classic rectangular cut scarf is the way to go.

5. Gloves/Mittens

Lastly, you will certainly need a pair of gloves or mittens. Your hands are bound to get cold if you’re planning to be outside during the winter. Nothing is worst than having to jam your hands into your pockets the entire time you are out because you forgot your gloves.

I personally love mittens because I can always throw some handwarmers in there to keep my hand toasty. Gloves are also great if you plan on using your phone or going through your bag while you’re out and don’t want to be constantly taking your mitts off. Make sure you get lined mittens as these are truly superior, unlined mittens just don’t keep the warmth in as well.

These are all the winter essentials that I think everyone that has to face the cold winters needs in their wardrobe.
