If your planning a trip this year before the weather gets cool or perhaps you are already planning your 2022 travels, here is a quick run down of my 2021 summer Prince Edward County trip including places to eat and things to do. I must admit that my friend planned most of this trip but I can attest to the wineries themselves and the food!

places to drink

Do a wine tour/wine tasting – one of the days we did an actual tour which was so fun because we didn’t have to worry about driving around. Unfortunately there is no Uber service in the area so if you plan on visiting several wineries you will have to taxi between them or assign a designated driver. Some of these wineries have some distance between them so it’s not as bike friendly as Niagara on the Lake.

Here are the places we visited:

Sugarbush Vineyards – this was the first stop on our guided wine tour. Across the street there is a place called Flossie’s, a sandwich shop which we were told is usually very busy. You can grab food there if you’re hungry before getting some wine at Sugarbush.

Broken Stone Winery – started by a “corporate refugee” from Toronto as our wine tour guide stated, this was also a nice place. I ended buying two bottles (loved their “welcome wine” which was the Amour) also loved that the owner was very active and was around to chat with the patrons.

Harwood Estate Vineyards – loved the wines here and ended up buying 3 bottles. They had funny names like “friendship” and “mermaid” and their tastings came with pairings which was a nice touch!

Huff Estates Inn & Winery – this was the last stop on our guided wine tour. Huff Estates had a beautiful sculpture garden which was landscaped very nicely. The food also looked amazing (wood oven pizzas) but since we had dinner plans we didn’t eat here.

Norman Hardie – There were also a few sculptures here and there was also plenty of space for dining. I purchased some maple butter from the gift shop that I have already been enjoying.

Millefleurs – a beautiful, kid friendly winery which was pretty unique. There were lavender fields and sunflowers which were perfect for the gram. The wine here was all honey based making it particularly sweet (which is my preference when it comes to wines).

Karlo Estates – this place had two of my favourite wines from the trip (one of which was new and already won an award – don’t ask about the details because I truly cannot recall what award that was). Scroll to the end of this post for details of my wine haul.

Closson Chase – This is a popular venue with some pretty good food, a little dine in section and is pretty cool-looking with its purple exterior.

Places to stay

There are pretty much motels, Airbnbs and bed and breakfasts in the area. I loved The June Motel – it was super cute and the location was great because it was near some busier restaurants (we had a dinner and breakfast near our motel).

Some motels (such as ours) require a minimum two night stay and they book up quickly so I would recommend planning for a stay during the week to avoid the crowds and to increase the likelihood that you’ll get a room.

Places to eat

Can’t forget to eat, here are the restaurants we went to and ones we didn’t make it to but heard great things:

The Blue Sail – great location for us and there are also other places within walking distance if the wait time happens to be long.

The Drake Devonshire – went here for brunch, could not make reservations at the time but noticed that some people had reservations. If you get there well before they open in the morning (they open at 10am) you can minimize the wait time to avoid any potential “h-anger”.

The Lakeside Motel – love the view and vibe at this place. They had blankets and mosquito repellent at the restaurant which is so nice. The motel was also very beautiful and had a resort-like feeling. They also had a beautiful pool that I believe you can go to for the day (for a price) if you’d like to avoid the busy beaches.

Flame + Smith – unfortunately we weren’t able to make it here. They do not take reservations and they close at 8pm. We arrived at 7pm and they had already stopped seating however a lot of the people we spoke to told us this spot was amazing.

Sand and Pearl – no lunch on Fridays so unfortunately we weren’t able to eat here but we heard great things and this place also takes reservations. However, if you don’t show up there is a fee so make sure you have something solidified before making that reservation.

Some of the wineries also serve food which is a great way to grab something to eat while doing a wine tasting!

Like most things I recommend doing your research beforehand. Map out your stay and make reservations where you can in order to make sure you get the most of your trip. Look at menus, view Instagram pages so you know what the place looks like and whether you like the vibes.

Here is a photo haul of the box of wine I collected throughout our trip:
