This is a post about everything you need to know about eyelashes from having eyelash extensions to rehabilitating them using eyelash serums.

A couple of years ago I decided to get eyelash extensions. Thankfully, my cousin was getting into this business, it so I was able to go to her and I really loved the result. I was getting classic lashes and the results were not too dramatic and ridiculous-looking. The only issue was that the more I went, I began to develop an allergy or sensitivity to the glue. My eyes would get super red it was pretty scary. It would subside in a few days but it was kind of embarrassing having to go to work with red eyes. One of my eyes was a lot worse than the other. Because I really loved the result, I continued to get them done for about 6 months.

Before I stopped overall, I needed them done before I went away on a trip but because my cousin lived pretty far from me, I decided to go to another studio and lash tech. This studio was known for volume and hybrid sets. I got a hybrid set and I absolutely hated the result. I think this was a very important lesson. Do your research before going to a lash tech, investigate their portfolio on instagram and make sure they have photos of eyes that have the same features as yours so you get a good idea of what their work will look like on you (this also goes for services like hair and nails). It is important to go to someone that you trust and that shares the same vision as you otherwise you will end up looking like a snapchat filter like I did.

I ended up trimming my eyelashes because they were too long and large. In the first few days after I got them, I wore my blue light glasses around work to hide them.

After I returned from my trip, I decided to give it a rest and rehabilitate my lashes. I used Eyeenvy (a lash serum that is apparently safe to use when you have lash extensions on) and it worked really well. My eyelashes grew back super long and it really made it look like I had extensions on when I didn’t. I would get compliments on my lashes and they were doing so well.

At the time I’m writing this post, we are still in quarantine. I finished my Eyeenvy serum and haven’t been able to find it online (looks like you can only get this from an authorized seller, usually other lash techs) so I got Lashfood in the Sephora sale and I am testing it out. I will leave an update in a few weeks once I have a good idea of its performance in comparison to eyeenvy.

What I did notice about my lash extensions were the following:

  1. in order to make your extensions lash long it is best to wear no eye makeup (no mascara, eyeshadow or eyeliner)
  2. wash them at least every other day – when the lashes are clean they seem to last a lot longer. A lot of people are concerned with washing them too often for fear that this will cause them to fall out, I think it is more important to keep your lashes clean even if that means washing them every other day or more often than you would like.
  3. brush your lashes often. Most lash techs will usually send you home with a little mascara brush. I make sure I always have a clean one and brush my lashes before bed and first thing in the morning to make sure they aren’t tangled
  4. be very gentle around your eyes. It is natural that your eyelashes will fall out with your extensions and this will of course happen but it is important to exercise care when washing your face and lashes so that you don’t expedite this process.

I hope after this quarantine, I am able to go back to getting my lashes done. I miss the look and I think getting them every so often (with breaks in between) is a good idea. I think that lashes definitely get very addictive so if you’re thinking of doing them for the first time I would be aware that you will likely (depending on how often you will need to get them filled) have to maintain this and factor this expense into your monthly budget. I found that something that has really helped the redness was taking allergy medication after getting my lashes done and that has really helped suppressing the redness.

Everyone is different and people will react to different glues and lashes differently. Some people need to get them done every 4 weeks, others every 6 weeks. I was pretty much getting fills every 6 weeks which was perfect for me and my schedule.

Anyway if you are looking for a good lash techs in Toronto here are my suggestions just based on in instragram snooping:

@eyeluxxe
@hellogorgeous.studios
@marveleyes.lashes

However the best thing to do is to just go on instagram and search tags like “torontolashes” and browse to photos so see what you like.

UPDATE: I’ve been using Lashfood for almost exactly one month now and I can say that the difference has been minimal at best. Truthfully, I do not see much of a difference. I will provide an update in about 2 months time but at this rate I will likely have to try getting my hands on the Eyenvy serum.
