Given the climate of 2020 (as I’m writing this Toronto is going into lockdown again tomorrow), I think holiday cards are becoming a realistic way to connect with your friends and family since most people are likely not getting together this holiday season due to the ongoing pandemic.

Here are some ways to make sure your card doesn’t go straight into the bin:

1. think about your message

I know that sometimes it’s hard to think of things to say but I would say that the right message can often be the determining factor of whether or not your card goes straight to the bin. Take some thought and write a nice meaningful message, if you can’t think of one try googling some good quotes you know the recipient would enjoy. This is a great way to make sure your card doesn’t go straight to the bin, people love to keep a good quote that they can relate to.

2. pick a pretty card

When selecting a card I would aim to get something pretty and something that you know the recipient would enjoy. People will often prop their cards up on their desk or even pit it to a bulletin board and they are more likely to do this when the card is pretty and one that they love. In this day and age where image is everything I would encourage you to take the time to pick a beautiful card that the recipient will want to keep and cherish.

3. consider making your own card

One hobby that I’ve taken up while in law school is card-making. I make all of my own cards. Last year, I made cards for everyone at my work and my husbands work as well. Everyone loved it. I used watercolours but you can use anything you like! There are so many videos on watercolouring so this was a great and beautiful way for me to practice. I would also personalize the card by handlettering the recipients name on the card (handletting is another thing I started getting into and learned more about on youtube). Those who love and can appreciate handmade things (as I do) would appreciate an amazing handmade card!

4. include a frame

Another way to easily make sure your card does not get tossed is to include a frame that would fit the card perfectly. This way, the recipient can always frame the card especially if they love the art and the card can double as decor for their home or office. This is a great way to repurpose the card as well!
