As much as I love reading and participating in the latest fashion trends, I am as basic as they come and love getting pieces that I can wear season after season and year after year. In this post, I will be going over some trend-proof fall essentials and things that you can add to your fall/winter wardrobe.

1. Leather

A great way to transition your wardrobe from summer is faux leather: leather pants or a skirt or even a jacket. When looking for faux leather items it’s important to get good quality pieces so that they last.

Brown or tan leather goes with all sorts of neutrals including beiges, blacks and whites. During the Aritzia clientele sale I got a cognac leather skirt and I’m so excited to use it this call (keep an eye out for a styling series).

2. Plaid

Another classic fall print that I have seen year after year is plaid. I think the best way to do plaid is not the typical red and green thanksgiving/Christmas print but rather a smaller grey or brown based plaid which pairs great with neutrals.

3. Blazers

Blazers are another great way to deal with transitional weather. A great blazer can be used in place of a coat or jacket especially when temperatures aren’t too low. I love the look of a chunky sweater with blazer or even leather leggings with a longer blazer. You can also use a blazer to layer under coats in the winter which is a great way to make the most use of your pieces.

4. Block heeled booties

Last year during the pandemic, I purchased two pairs of block heeled ankle boots a beige and a black pair. They’re super comfortable and the profile is very classic and flattering. Ankle boots pair perfectly with tights, jeans and dresses and is a great way to transition your skirts and dresses from the summer season.

5. Knee high boots

Another great classic is a pair of high boots. High boots can be a bit finicky especially for us short girls. I find that if you’re on the shorter side, boots that end at the knee or right below the knee are the most flattering for petite girls.

I find that thigh high boots are a bit too long for someone like me with shorter legs. When it comes to long/high boots I prefer black and my preference is a suede material. I find the leather ones can be a bit heavy especially with dresses so suede is more versatile.

6. White sneakers

White sneakers are such a great versatile piece you can wear in every season . If you purchase a leather pair you can also carry these over into the fall and it’s a great neutral that goes within most colours and even dresses. A clean white sneaker can last you years and are a great way to dress down an outfit. I’ve had my white sneakers for 5 years now. I’ve revamped them once with a fresh pair of white laces and I will occasionally wipe them down to freshen them up.

7. Long sleeved dress

Two types of essential dresses for the fall season are a classic sweater dress and a flowy light weight long sleeve dress. You can really make these dresses go a long way with different types is belts and boots. It’s so important to make sure you can seamlessly integrate new pieces into your existing wardrobe which is why I am so adamant about making sure every new piece works with your entire wardrobe. The best way to do this is to take the time to do some planning and to do your research.

8. Neutral knits

Another thing I have a great weakness for – a cozy, high quality neutral knit. I usually opt for more warmer tones rather than cool greys. I find the warm neutrals work well with denim, leather and tights. You can certainly integrate variety with the weight of the knit, texture (popcorn knits vs. cable knits) and neck lines (v-necks, crew necks and turtlenecks).
