For everything you need to know about eyelashes, this post is for you. For context, I have pretty straight eyelashes (asian eyelashes). I previous wrote a post about eyelashes last year . As someone who generally only wears natural makeup, I really do try to accentuate my eyelashes. I have pretty thick and strong brows and smaller eyes so I find focusing on lash care can really help make me look more put together.
Here are some of my favourite products and tips for lash care. I will confess that I spend nearly a year getting eyelash extensions and I absolutely LOVED the look. I think the key is to make sure you find a lash tech that understands your preferences and that has a style that you like. Although these lashes can be high maintenance, as I am writing this we are still in a pandemic so for those that are not ready to take the plunge and commit to extensions, here are some easy things you can do in order to jump start your natural lash game.
Just a disclaimer, not all of these will work for everyone and sometimes only one or two of these practices will be enough to make a huge difference.
1. Use a serum
My top tip is using a serum. When I decided to stop getting extensions, I was left with pretty sparse lashes so I went ahead and got Eyenvy which was recommended to me by my mother in law. It worked wonders and the one bottle lasted me nearly a year.
I have only tried two products: Eyenvy which I love and stand by and Lash Food which I have returned as it was not effective. Eyenvy has provided me with so many benefits, the only issue is being able to find a seller. Last time I checked, it is not available online and only available through an authorized seller (most salons and beauty technicians will sell this product). Whereas Lash Food is available from Sephora. I have read some great reviews on Lash Food it just did not work for me unfortunately.
2. Use a balm or oil to remove mascara
Another thing that has really changed up my lash condition is removal using a balm or oil based product. Personally, I have used coconut oil for years and it has worked very well for me. A balm or oil based product really does a great job of loosening mascara and allowing removal in the most gentle and delicate way. It really helps avoid rubbing and friction that can occur with cotton rounds and micellar water for example.
3. Use eye drops
This one is going to sound a bit strange. After I got laser eye surgery I stopped rubbing my eyes altogether (if you are doing this you need to stop because it is terrible for your corneas) and instead I have used eyedrops when I want that soothing feeling. I absolutely love eye drops now. When I am feeling my eyes getting dry or wake up extra tired, I will pop them in my eyeballs. I don’t know why, but when I use eye drop somewhat regularly, I notice that my lash line becomes thicker and my lashes become longer. I can only speculate this has something to do with keeping the lash line moist. Don’t ask me about the science behind this but just judging from my mirror, eye drops totally make a difference!
As a side note, I do not recommend Visine drops because I do not find it effective. I would recommend purchasing Systane drops there are different formulas and some work better than other depending on the person.
4. Stop using waterproof makeup
This goes hand and hand with the balm/oil remover. In order to ensure that there is minimal friction in your mascara removal, make sure that the mascara you use is NOT waterproof. For those that suffer from oil eyes or raccoon eyes (this happens when you have super straight lashes), one way to avoid this is to curl your lashes so that it is not rubbing against the lower lash line and causing transfer of the product.
5. Take a multi vitamin or hair, skin and nails
Lastly, I find that taking a multivitamin OR a hair, skin and nails vitamin really does help with overall hair growth (including lash health). I know everyone has their own opinions on the efficacy of these vitamins but this truly does work for me.
